One killed after roof collapses at Netaji Commercial Market in Malda, another injured

A tragic accident occurred in Malda on Eid morning after a portion of the roof of Netaji Commercial Market collapsed, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured. The incident took place around 7 am at Netaji Commercial Market in the Rathbari area under English Bazar.

The deceased has been identified as Mintu Sarkar, who was reportedly on night duty guarding the market. Another person, identified as Deep Sardar, was also trapped under the debris after the roof gave way. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing a loud crash and helped rescue the victims from under the rubble. Both injured individuals were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Mintu Sarkar dead. Deep Sardar is currently undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and started an investigation into the incident.

According to local residents, the roof of the market building had been in a dilapidated condition for years. The market, maintained by the English Bazar Municipality, houses numerous shops despite several structures being old and worn out. Locals believe the overnight rain may have weakened the already fragile roof, leading to the collapse.
